With buildings accounting for over 80% of greenhouse gas emissions in St. Louis, MO, the City’s Board of Alderman quickly and unanimously passed an ordinance that would help their municipality reduce its carbon footprint. This ordinance outlines the St Louis Buildings Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS), which establishes energy benchmarks for buildings covered.
What is Covered by the St. Louis Building Energy Performance Standards?
St. Louis Building Energy Performance Standards apply to every municipal, residential, commercial, and institutional building that is over 50,000 square feet. These standards and building types are based on three years of local energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions data.
Buildings covered in this phase of the City’s BEPS will reach their first benchmark in 2025. The Board of Alderman will release new, stricter standards in 2026 and every 5 years thereafter. To learn more about St. Louis Building Energy Performance Standards, click here.
