With commercial buildings accounting for over 71% of greenhouse gas emissions in Washington DC, the District’s Department of Energy & Environment has become the organization overseeing its ambitious environmental goals. This goal is to reduce the District’s greenhouse gas emissions and energy usage by 50% by 2032. Ultimately, Washington, DC aims to become completely carbon neutral. To help commercial building owners on the path to carbon neutrality, officials have developed the Washington DC Building Energy Performance Standards (BEPS).
What are the Washington DC Building Energy Performance Standards?
The Building Energy Performance Standards outlined by Washington DC set the minimum energy performance standards for buildings covered in the law. These standards clearly outline what buildings are covered, and set benchmarks for their progress in the coming years.
Phase one of the Washington DC Building Energy Performance Standards cover any building larger than 50,000 gross square feet, may it be a government or privately owned structure.
